CRN letter published critiquing NEJM article on ER visits and supplements

“Regardless of what one thinks about the regulatory framework for the dietary supplement industry, meaningful discussions about improving public policy for one industry should not be based on statistics that cover a patchwork of several industries,” CRN’s Duffy MacKay wrote in a letter to the editor of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) recently published online. Dr. MacKay’s missive came in response to the article, “Emergency Department Visits Related to Dietary Supplements.”

CRN’s letter to the editor is the latest in the association’s efforts to set the record straight on this issue. Immediately following the article’s publication in October 2015, CRN released a statement explaining that context is key to analyzing the ER data. In addition, CRN coordinated an educational briefing on Capitol Hill, with Rick Kingston, Pharm.D., of Associate Member Company SafetyCall International, who debunked the NEJM article. Dr. Kingston will deliver a similar message to pharmacists and nurse practitioners during a webinar on March 3.
