Senate proposal to restrict supplements sold on military bases thwarted for now; CRN remains vigilant

Proposed legislation that would create unnecessary burdens for responsible companies manufacturing safe and beneficial products was withdrawn from consideration during a key Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) last week. CRN had promptly issued an opposition statement in response to Sen. Richard Blumenthal’s (D-CT) announcement of his intention to offer an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would require all dietary supplement products sold on military bases (including commissaries or retail stores) to be verified by an independent third-party selected by FDA. CRN, having alerted members in advance of issuing its statement, actively engaged in outreach to key congressional committee members on why they should oppose the amendment. Sen. Heinrich (D-NM) and his staff worked closely with CRN and led the opposition to this unnecessary amendment in the SASC.  While the amendment is no longer a threat in Committee, Sen. Blumenthal may offer it again when the NDAA reaches the Senate floor for final vote in the next couple weeks, CRN’s Mike Greene advises.
