FTC announces Herbalife settlement
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Friday announced that Herbalife will restructure its multi-level marketing operations and pay $200 million for consumer redress to settle commission charges. See more in FTC’s press release.
FDA updates FSMA rule on facilities registration
FDA last week issued amendments to its final rule on Registration of Food Facilities under FSMA. The agency will hold a webinar on Aug. 3 to present key pieces of the final rule. Dietary supplement facilities have been subject to the facility registration requirement since 2012 but these changes to the final rule will clarify what information must be disclosed to FDA. FDA approves vitamin D increase for milk and alternatives
FDA last week approved an increase to the amount of vitamin D that may be added as an optional ingredient to milk, and approved the addition of vitamin D to beverages made from edible plants intended as milk alternatives. Manufacturers can now voluntarily add up to 84 IU/100g of vitamin D3 to milk, 84 IU/100g of vitamin D2 to plant-based beverages intended as milk alternatives, and 89 IU/100g of vitamin D2 to plant-based yogurt alternatives.
That’s not natural, FTC tells four firms
Following a public comment period, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has approved four final consent orders against companies that allegedly misrepresented their personal care products as “All-Natural” or “100% Natural,” despite the fact that they contain man-made ingredients. Although these settlements don’t directly relate to dietary supplements, they offer valuable insight into the FTC’s thinking with respect to “natural” claims across all products.
