FDA releases final rule on GRAS substances
FDA announced the release of the final rule on food ingredients that may be "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) just one day after publishing the Revised NDI Draft Guidance (see above). The "GRAS" final rule will appear in the Federal Register on Aug. 17. The pre-publication PDF is available here.

Signed, sealed, celebrated—federal GMO labeling bill is now law
CRN welcomed President Obama’s signing into law S.764, the “Biotech Labeling Solutions Act,” issuing a statement acknowledging the bipartisan efforts of Representatives Mike Conaway (R-TX), Collin Peterson (D-MN), Mike Pompeo (R-KS) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), and Senators Pat Roberts (R-KS) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI). “Demonstrating strong leadership, their resolution showed an impressive spirit of compromise by putting the needs of consumers first,” CRN’s Steve Mister noted. CRN team grows with two additional staff members
CRN recently welcomed two new staff members to its team: Maya English joined as manager, Membership, Education, and Events, and Amour Clinton joined as administrative assistant, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs. Ms. English will be responsible for managing CRN special events, meetings and conferences as well as webinars and other educational programs and materials at CRN and providing support to the Membership department. Research Watch: Amino acid blend shown to alleviate cognitive fatigue in athletes
Acknowledging the decline in cognitive performance that has been shown after fatiguing exercise, authors of a study, published recently in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, aimed to investigate the effect of the combined supplementation of branched chain amino acids (BCAA), arginine, and citrulline on central fatigue after three simulated matches in well-trained taekwondo athletes. The randomized controlled trial involved 12 male athletes who performed high-intensity exercise and received 0.17 g/kg BCAA, 0.05 g/kg arginine and 0.05 g/kg citrulline or placebo. Those receiving the supplementation performed better on a cognitive performance tests after each bout. See abstract for more information.
