Puerto Rico’s Secretary of Health calls off attempt to tax dietary supplements

CRN is pleased to announce that Puerto Rico Administrative Order (AO) 346, which would have created a registration fee on the island for both dietary supplements and retailers who sell them, will not be enforced, thanks to the efforts and cooperation of Puerto Rico’s Secretary of Health, Ana Ríus Armendáriz, M.D. The Department of Health order, which CRN has been following since February, would have raised the prices of supplements for Puerto Rican consumers, limiting their access to products and negatively impacting business that contribute to the local economy.

CRN’s Mike Greene was in San Juan this past week meeting with with the Puerto Rican Department of Health, legislators, retailers, and the Chamber of Commerce. “Our priority is to ensure that consumers continue to have access to safe, beneficial, and affordable dietary supplements,” Mr. Greene said. CRN has worked with the chamber of commerce and the retail association on the island as well as industry and local retailers to build a coalition of opposition to the order. “While CRN staff has also held discussions with the Congressional task force, created by the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA), addressing the island’s debt crisis, CRN believes the issue is best addressed directly with the Puerto Rican officials,” Mr. Greene explained. CRN will continue to dialogue with Puerto Rican decision makers with the common goal of protecting both consumers and the industry. For more information, contact Mike Greene (202-204-7690).
