HIRING: Senior Director, Communications
The Senior Director, Communications serves as a senior strategic communications professional for the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), CRN staff, and CRN members. The role reports to the Senior Vice President, Communications on the ideation, supervision, execution and measurement of the association’s overall strategic communications program. The position is responsible for development and implementation of communications to internal stakeholders and external audiences to promote the mission of the association and the valuable roles of dietary supplements and functional food for nutrition and better health.
The primary responsibilities and expectations for this position are:
- Works with the Senior Vice President, Communications, the Communications Manager, and in close consultation with other communications staff and other departments, in coordinating rapid response for media and member companies on scientific studies, regulatory and legislative issues
- Develops talking points and/or press releases or statements; proactively or reactively reaches out to media on these issues
- Identifies media opportunities to promote CRN’s work and proactively generates positive stories around new science
- Serves as an additional resource to communications staff in fielding and responding to consumer, trade and policy media inquiries, including writing and editing media materials and messaging documents
- Develops consumer press contacts and maintains relationships with media
Content Strategy and Creation
- Collaborates with other members of communications staff to curate engaging content for multiple platforms including our daily member newsletter the Daily Supplement, CRN’s social media accounts and CRN’s monthly newsletter for various audiences, including retailers and registered dieticians
Campaign Development & Execution
- Develops and implements proactive consumer education and advocacy campaigns that include engagement strategies to ensure greater reach
- Directs day-to-day execution of programming to assure attainment of campaign objectives
- Collaborates with CRN members in message development and to leverage their resources for broader reach
Third Party Advocacy/Alliance Building
- Maximizes sponsorships and partnerships with third parties
- Serves as CRN representative for various coalitions/alliances and partnerships

However, his own roles – as overall reputation strategist for the industry, the association, and key spokesperson on some of the most contentious industry issues, plus advisory roles to association members and the senior strategic team – mean you will often exercise independent judgment, display ingenuity and initiative, and mentor other team members as well.
The Senior Director, Communications must share the Senior Vice President’s passion for developing and cultivating talent. S/he should have an ample body of high-level communications experience and accomplishments to draw upon and should be comfortable modeling excellent strategic behavior at all times, and in actively coaching members of the team on an ongoing basis. A “roll up the sleeves” attitude is needed; we are a team of five, and on any given day, you may balance very high-level strategic work with fairly rudimentary tasks. In short, success in this role requires not just thinking and strategizing, or just managing or coaching – but actively doing – whether that’s writing a press release, making a pitch call, troubleshooting a problem for a member, or creating content. QUALIFICATIONS / JOB PREREQUISITES:
Strong communicator with excellent written, oral and presentation capabilities; strategic thinker; creative problem solver; fearless advocate for our industry and members; diplomatic skills; professional demeanor; ability to work quickly, juggle projects and meet deadlines; big picture thinker also comfortable with the smallest of details. Must be prepared to actively collaborate with other association disciplines (science, government relations, legal, finance, membership, human relations, education/events). Demonstrated ability to cultivate and develop team members is essential. Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or related area preferred. More than eight years public relations/communications job experience is required, including at least three in a supervisory role. Public relations agency and/or association experience is preferred, but corporate experience is also highly valued.
