CRN says botanical supplement safety starts with ingredients at NTP workshop

CRN’s Duffy MacKay last week described how responsible industry helps ensure botanical dietary supplements are safe for consumers during a workshop held by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program (NTP). In his presentation, Dr. MacKay illustrated the supplement safety paradigm as a three-legged stool, supported by fastidious ingredient selection, good manufacturing practices and post-market surveillance. The NTP workshop raised questions about assessing the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination (ADME) of botanicals. Experts from CRN member companies including P&G, the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention and NSF International also spoke at the workshop, along with representatives from government such as the Office of Dietary Supplements and FDA.
