Lawmakers introduce bipartisan CBD legislation for food, beverages

Congress is talking CBD. Reps. Kathleen Rice (D-NY), Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Angie Craig (D-IA), and Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) recently introduced bipartisan legislation to require FDA to regulate CBD as a food and beverage ingredient.

Background: CRN’s understanding is that this was prompted by a CBD beverage company’s desire for a “companion” to H.R. 841, which addresses dietary supplements only. CRN has endorsed H.R. 841 and is actively advocating for congressional consideration.

Not all good news: This new bill only applies to food and beverage, explicitly exempting dietary supplements. The proposal directs to FDA to establish a maximum serving limit, which CRN opposes for dietary supplements. CRN is also concerned that the proposal limits the regulation of CBD and does not include other hemp extracts.

Supporting nutrition research community is critical, urges CRN’s Dr. Wong

Attracting young scientists to the industry is vital for its future, CRN’s Andrea Wong, Ph.D., recently said in an interview for the International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations’ (IADSA) December newsletter. The article spotlighted CRN’s efforts to support and engage with the nutrition research community.

Dr. Wong discussed how misconceptions about the science of supplements and lack of awareness about career paths in the industry can be traced back to the education system. “There’s so much untapped talent that could be coming into our industry, but many young people don’t even know this category exists, or that it’s scientifically based.”

CRN’s new joint initiative with the American Society for Nutrition Foundation (ASNF), CASP, provides study enrichment for upcoming nutrition professionals by awarding five ASN student members with educational grants to virtually attend CRN's Science in Session annual event.
