Access to sports nutrition and weight management products saved in New York
Milly the cat, legislative consultant to CRN VP of Government Relations Julia Gustafson, keeps watch over state proceedings late night/early morning. CRN is pleased to report that problematic age-restrictive legislation did not advance to Governor Cuomo's desk, ensuring New Yorkers will retain access to lawful dietary supplement products.
CRN applauded legislators in New York for recognizing that Senate Bill 16-D and Assembly Bill 431-B would have negatively impacted consumers and the local economy. “CRN thanks the state assembly for recognizing the damage this bill would do to consumers and retailers,” said Julia Gustafson, vice president, government relations, CRN. If enacted, the proposals would have restricted access to two broad categories of dietary supplements and functional food—sports nutrition and weight management products.
CRN opposed Senate Bill 16-D and Assembly Bill 431-B since introduction. The association conferred with bill sponsors and stakeholders, engaged in grassroots activities, dialogued with local retailers in New York, conducted bipartisan outreach to state legislators, and worked with on-the-ground lobbyists to broadly communicate CRN’s concerns with the bill.
“CRN will continue to engage the proponents in New York and watch for similar legislation that is introduced year after year in other states, including Massachusetts and California,” said Ms. Gustafson. Read more in CRN's press release.

Mister offers industry perspective in support of HR 841 during briefing with Rep. Schrader
"This legal obstacle is not a safety issue, it’s an economic one," stated CRN President & CEO Steve Mister during a recent U.S. Hemp Roundtable briefing on HR 841 with lead bill sponsor Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR). Mister offered insights on what the legislation does and why it is critical to the creation of a regulatory environment for hemp-derived CBD and other cannabinoids.
Mister noted that, prior to the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act created a race to market in which "the dietary supplement industry had its shoelaces tied together because we couldn’t get to market, but the drug side of the industry was certainly free to investigate and commercialize CBD and other cannabinoids." HR 841, Mister emphasized, creates an important exception to the drug preclusion rule of the FD&C Act, allowing hemp-derived CBD to coexist in both the drug and dietary supplement spaces.
HR 841 continues to gain additional cosponsors on a bipartisan basis. CRN, along with other supporters of the legislation, have had numerous discussions with the staff of the Energy & Commerce Committee that has jurisdiction for the bill, who have indicated that a hearing on the bill could occur as soon as this summer. CRN continues to build support for HR 841 and to address objections that have been raised about the legislation.
