2015 CRN-I Symposium to Expand on Discussion of Nutrient Reference Value Endpoints—Symposium Convenient to CCNFSDU Meeting

Manno, Switzerland, 31 March 2015The Council for Responsible Nutrition-International (CRN-I), the international arm of the U.S.-based Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), today opened registration for its sixth annual symposium, to take place 20 November 2015 in Kronberg, Germany. The 2015 symposium, “Nutrient Reference Value – Non-Communicable Disease (NRV-NCD) Endpoints: A case for both essential and non-essential nutrients,” is planned in tandem with the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) meeting taking place 23 to 27 November in Bad Soden (about 15 minutes away).

“Building on our successful model of presenting in-depth scientific and regulatory content relevant to Codex policymaking, CRN-I will this year convene experts prior to the CCNFSDU meeting to explore the existing scientific endpoints for evaluating Nutrient Reference Values,” said Jim Griffiths, Ph.D., vice president, scientific and international affairs, CRN-I. “We know that both essential and non-essential nutrients play a role in chronic disease prevention and we hope that through the scientific data presented at our symposium, policy makers can consider how to translate that science into Codex policy.” The 2015 symposium content will expand on topics addressed in previous years’ symposia—the summaries of which have been published in international journals, with abstracts now available on the CRN-I website in 10 languages.

Among the speakers slated for the symposium are keynoters Joanne Lupton, Ph.D., from Texas A&M University, Texas, U.S., and Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., from Tufts University, Massachusetts, U.S. The full program is under development, but topics related to omega-3 fatty acids and NRV-NCD endpoints will play prominently on the agenda.
