This event will be sponsored by the bipartisan, bicameral Dietary Supplement Caucus along with support from trade associations representing the dietary supplement industry—the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). Dr. Richard "Rick" Kingston, President of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs at SafetyCall International, will be our guest speaker. This briefing will examine the AER data collected since the passage of the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act of 2006, and what it reveals about the safety profile of dietary supplements.
This briefing will also answer the following questions:
- Does the industry have a safety problem?
- What products are most often associated with adverse events?
- Are safety concerns already evident for CBD-containing supplements?

Latest Congressional Dietary Supplement Briefing #37 held on Wednesday, October 23rd
The educational event, held on October 23rd, was sponsored by the bipartisan, bicameral Dietary Supplement Caucus with help from trade associations representing the dietary supplement industry—the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). Three subject area experts on DSHEA, Mr. Paul D. Rubin of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, Ms. Claudia Lewis of Venable LLP, and Ms. Diane McEnroe of Sidley Austin LLP, all presented at the briefing. Each speaker focused on a specific element to DSHEA, ranging from ingredient safety, to good manufacturing practices and labeling, to enforcement tools at FDA's disposal.
The nearly 40 attendees were presented with several case studies and graphics that illustrate DSHEA's legacy of sucess.

Latest Congressional Dietary Supplement Briefing #36 held on July 18th
The educational event, held on July 18, was sponsored by the bipartisan, bicameral Dietary Supplement Caucus with help from trade associations representing the dietary supplement industry—the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). Dr. Paula Trumbo, former FDA acting director and current Independent Consultant with EAS Consulting Group, spoke on the upcoming supplement facts label changes.
The nearly 40 attendees viewed examples of efforts to educate consumers on the label changes, including Label Wise, an initiative aimed at educating consumers of the upcoming changes to the supplement facts label. When talking to either constituents or consumers in general, attendees were encouraged to utilize the toolkit of materials available on the Label Wise website ( www.BeLabelWise.org ).

Representative Ben McAdams (UT-04) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus
Serving his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives, Ben McAdams represents the people of Utah's 4th Congressional district, which includes Salt Lake City, Utah, Juab, and Sanpete Counties. Prior to his election to congress in 2019, Congressman McAdams served as mayor of Salt Lake County. From 2009 to 2012, he served as state senator, representing the Salt Lake County area. During his time in the state senate, he served on the Appropriations, Judiciary and Government Operations and Political Subdivisions committee. Prior to that, he was a lawyer who specialized in securities law at the law firm, Dorsey & Whitney. Congressman McAdams received his B.A. from the University of Utah and is a graduate of Columbia Law School in New York City, New York.
Representative Matt Cartwright (PA-08) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus

First elected to the House of Representatives in 2012, Matt Cartwright represents Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District, which includes Wayne, Lackawana, Luzerne, and Monroe Counties, as well as Scranton and Wilkes-Barre in northeastern Pennsylvania. He currently sits on the House Committee on Appropriations and House Committee on Natural Resources. Prior to his election to Congress, he worked as a lawyers for twenty-five years at the firm Munley, Munley and Cartwright. He received his B.A. from Hamilton College and earned hid J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Representatives Peter King (NY-02) and Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05) Join the Dietary Supplement Caucus
Rep. Peter King (NY-02)
First elected to the House of Representative in 1992, Congressman Peter King represents New York's 2nd District, which encompasses parts of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Massapequa, Islip and Ronkonkoma. He currently sits on the House Committee on Financial Services, the House Committee on Homeland Security, and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Prior to his election to Congress, he served as Nassau County Comptroller from 1982 to 1993. Congressman King previously served in the U.S. Army National Guard and recieved his B.A. in Political Science from St. Francis College in 1965 and his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School in 1968.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05)
Congressman Josh Gottheimer is currently serving his second term as U.S. Representative from New Jersey's 5th District, which includes Bergen, Passaic, Sussex and Warren Counties in Northern New Jersey. Her currently sits on the House Committee on Financial Services. Prior to his election, Congressman Gottheimer worked as a speechwriter during the Clinton Administration and on several Democratic presidential campaigns. He also worked as an executive in the Ford Motor Company, Burson-Marsteller, Microsoft and the Federal Communications Commission. Congressman Gottheimer is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and earned his J.D. form Harvard Law School.

On Tuesday, May 7th, the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC) held it's 35th educational briefing since the caucus was established in 2006. This was the 1st educational briefing of the 116th congress. The congressional briefing centered on a comprehensive overview regarding the current legal and regulatory status of Cannabidiol (CBD), an extract from hemp. Representative Anthony Brindisi (NY-22) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (April 30, 2019)
Representative Anthony Brindisi (NY-22) currently serves as a freshman representative from New York's 22nd Congressional District, which includes the upstate towns and cities of Utica, Rome, Cortland and Binghamton. His committee assignments include the House Committees on Agriculture and Veterans Affairs. Prior to his election to Congress, he served as state assemblyman starting in 2011. Representative Brindisi is a graduate of Siena College, receiving his Bachelors of Arts in History and is a graduate of the Albany Law School.
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) currently serves as senior U.S. Senator from the state of Utah. He is seated on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate in 2010 as Utah's 16th senator, he served as a law clerk to Judge Dee Benson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, and then later with Supreme Court Justice Judge Samuel A. Alito. He then went on to work with the law firm Sidley & Austin. Senator Lee is a graduate from Brigham Young University, having received his Bachelor of Science in Political Science, and served as BYU's Student Body President his senior year. He then went on to graduate from BYU's Law School in 1997.

Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus Officially Registered for the 116th Caucus
The Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC) has been officially reformed and registered in the 116th Congress.
Since its inception in 2006, the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus has been a bipartisan, bicameral caucus that acts as forum for the exchange of ideas and information on dietary supplements, health and wellness.
Currently, the caucus boasts 36 members of Congress from both the House and Senate. Co-chairs include:
- Rep. Tony Cardenas (D-CA)
- Rep. John Curtis (R-UT)
- Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD)
- Senator Tim Scott (R-SC)
- Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM)
Again, the DSC remains an effective and active group that educates staff and members of Congress about dietary supplement and nutrition-related issues.
If your company representative(s) is not found among its ranks, CRN would encourage you to contact the office and suggest they consider joining the same. The goal is to reach 54 members (or 10% of Congress) by 2020.

On Wednesday, June 13th, Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC) held the 2nd educational briefing of 2018. This was the 5th briefing during the 115th Congress and the 33rd briefing since the caucus was establishment in 2006. The congressional briefing centered on Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D.'s discussion on “hidden hunger” and the affects of nutrient gaps among low-income Americans. Congressman John Curtis (UT-03) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Congressman John Curtis (R-UT) serves as a U.S. Representative from Utah's 3rd Congressional District, which includes Southeastern Utah, Provo and several suburbs of Salt Lake City. He currently serves on the House Committee on Small Business and and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Prior to his election to Congress in a special election held last year, Congressman Curtis served as Mayor of Provo from 2017 to 2017 and as a member of the Utah State Senate prior to that. He also worked as COO of the company, Action Target; manufacturer of shooting targets and ranges. Congressman Curtis earned his Bachelors of Science from Brigham Young University.
Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) serves as a U.S. Representative from New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, which includes Albuquerque and most of central New Mexico. She currently serves on the House Committee of Agriculture and the Committee on the Budget. Prior to her election to Congress in 2013, Congresswoman Lujan Grisham served on the New Mexico state cabinet as Secretary of Health and as Bernalillo County Commissioner. She earned her Bachelors in Science from the University of New Mexico in 1981 and earned her law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1987.
Rep. Mike Rogers (AL-03) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Congressman Rogers (R-AL) serves as a U.S. Representative from Alabama's 3rd congressional district, which includes the cities of Oxford and Auburn. He currently is a member of the House Committees on Agriculture, Homeland Security and Armed Services, where he also serves as chair of the subcommittee on Strategic Forces. Congressman Rogers earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science and his Masters of Public Administration from Jacksonville State University. Later, he earned his JD from the Birmingham School of
Law. Prior to entering Congress in 2003, he worked for the Calhoun Country Commission and served as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1994 to 2002.
Rep. Brett Guthrie (KY-02) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Congressman Guthrie (R-KY) serves as the U.S. Representative for Kentucky's 2nd congressional district, which include cities such as Bowling Green and Elizabethtown. He currently serves on both the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce for the 115th Congress. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1987 and his Master's of Public and Private Management from Yale University in 1997. Prior to his election to Congress in 2009, Congressman Guthrie served as a field artillery officer in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and was the former vice president of Trace Die Cast, Inc in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Jose Luis "Lou" Correa (D-CA) serves as the U.S. Representative for California's 46th congressional district. Before entering Congress, he served as a member of the California State Senate, representing the 34th Senate District. A graduate of Anaheim High School, Correa earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Cal State Fullerton as well as a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from UCLA. He was an investment banker, a real estate broker, and a college instructor.
Rep. Jack Bergman (MI-01) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
John W. "Jack" Bergman (R-MI) is a retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant general and the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 1st congressional district. He served as commanding general of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North. He also served as a naval aviator, flying rotary-winged aircraft such as the CH-46 and UH-1, as well as fixed-wing aircraft such as the T-28 and KC-130. He was elected to the U.S. House in 2016. Bergman is the highest-ranking military official ever elected to the U.S. Congress.
Rep. Chris Stewart (UT-02) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Rep. Stewart is an American author, businessman, and politician known for his bestsellers Seven Miracles That Saved America and The Miracle of Freedom: Seven Tipping Points That Saved the World. He currently represents Utah's 2nd congressional district. He graduated from Utah State University in 1984 before joining the United States Air Force. During his time in the Air Force, Rep. Stewart set three world speed records including the fastest nonstop flight around the world. After his service, he began writing novels and became the President and CEO of the Shipley Group. Rep. Stewart's New York Times bestsellers, Seven Miracles That Saved America and The Miracle of Freedom were published on October 14, 2009 and June 3, 2011. He formally announced his candidacy for Congress on December 6, 2011.
Rep. Julia Brownley (CA-26) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Rep. Brownley has been the United States Representative for California's 26th congressional district since 2013. Previously she served in the California State Assembly from 2006 to 2012. Before her political career, she worked in marketing and sales. Rep. Brownley received a bachelor's degree in political science from Mount Vernon College for Women in 1975 and a master's degree in business administration from American University in 1979 Rep. Brownley served on the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education from 1994–2006. During her time on the school board, she served three terms as president.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC)
Sworn into office on Jan. 3, 2017, Rep. Krishnamoorthi took Tammie Duckworth's seat as she ran, and won, a Senate seat. Rep. Krishnamoorthi is a graduate of Harvard Law School. Rep. Krishnamoorthi served as a partner at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis, as a special assistant attorney general in Illinois and as Illinois deputy state treasurer from 2007 through 2009. He was the president of Sivananthan Laboratories and Episolar Inc., which develop and sell technology for military and civilian customers, until resigning all his business positions before entering Congress to eliminate any conflicts of interest.
Rep. Andy Harris (MD-01) Joins the Dietary Supplement Caucus
Rep Andy Harris, Republican Congressman from Maryland's First District, has joined the Dietary Supplement Caucus. Harris has been a Member of Congress since 2011. Prior to his election, he was a physician at John Hopkins Hospital and a medical officer in the Navy Reserve. He currently holds a seat on the House Appropriations Committee and Chairs the GOP Doctor's Caucus.
The Dietary Supplement Caucus is Pleased to Announce A New Member: Ron Kind (D-WI)
Rep. Ron Kind, Democratic Congressman representing Wisconsin’s Third District, is the newest Member of the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus. Serving in Congress since 1997, He sits on the Ways and Means Committee and its Subcommittee on Health, actively sponsoring and co-sponsoring legislation which promotes health and wellness. He is a sponsor of the “FIT Kids Act”, legislation that would require school districts to report on students' physical activity and to give youngsters health and nutritional information, wrote the Healthy Kids Outdoors Act of 2010, is the former co-chair of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, and current co-chair of the Wellness Caucus and Fitness Caucus.
Rep. Mia Love Replaces Jason Chaffetz as Co-chair of the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus
Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, has taken on a new leadership role as a co-chair of the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC). Love replaces Rep. Jason Chaffetz, formerly a DSC co-chair, who retired from the House of Representatives this summer. The DSC is a bipartisan congressional group of legislators, who promote discussions among lawmakers about the benefits of dietary supplements, provide tips and insights for better health and wellness, and promote research about the health care cost savings these products provide. In her new role, Rep. Love joins Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., and Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., as DSC co-chairs.
