'Supplement OWL' holds promise for mandatory product listing, now houses more than 12,000 labels
"The Supplement OWL could absolutely serve as a model for how FDA could format its mandatory product listing, which is why broad industry participation is so critical," OWL Advisory Board (OAB) member Guru Ramanathan recently told HBW Insight. The voluntary product listing currently houses more than 12,000 labels from more than 100 brands, fellow OAB member Russ Michelson noted. He urged, "With so many companies already familiar with how to actively use it, then advocating for the OWL to be the format used by FDA is an obvious move."
Mandatory registration would add leverage to FDA's enforcement, Michelson pointed out. Using the OWL as a model "significantly reduces any new technical hurdles when creating a new system with a new back-end technology, and creates a bit of a more seamless transition for FDA."
In May, the OAB sent a letter to fellow dietary supplement trade associations urging them to encourage their members to place their labels in the registry. The letter highlighted the Supplement OWL's growth over the past three years and detailed exciting developments and important improvements recently made to the registry.

New FDA program provides performance transparency for public, industry
FDA has launched an agency-wide performance management program, FDA-TRACK that monitors, analyzes, and reports key performance data and projects for the agency's program offices and initiatives. The program is part of FDA's efforts surrounding transparency for the public and for industry.
Updated quarterly, the FDA-TRACK website provides the public with insights into the daily operations of the agency, and how day-to-day work has an impact on FDA's mission. The "What's New" page features the latest available performance data from across FDA, grouped into categories, including:
- Food Safety Dashboard
- Office of Clinical Policy and Programs (OCPP)
- Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER)
- Center for Tobacco Products (CTP)
