1. What inspired you to pursue a career in the nutraceutical industry, and how did your journey lead you to your current role at INNOBIO?

Dr. Wu: My journey into the nutraceutical industry was driven by a deep passion for turning scientific research into real-world applications. Early in my career, I became fascinated by the potential of scientific innovation to improve lives. I realized there was a tremendous opportunity to translate cutting-edge research into impactful products that could address real-world health challenges. This inspired me to pursue a path where I could combine my passion for science with an entrepreneurial vision, bridging the gap between innovation and practical solutions.

In 2003, after several technical exchanges and collaborations, I established INNOBIO with the mission of leveraging advanced biotechnology to deliver health-focused products globally. Initially, the road was challenging—adapting from a researcher to a business leader required me to embrace new skills, such as market analysis, regulatory compliance, and building a sustainable business model. Despite these challenges, I remained committed to creating a company that could make a meaningful impact on global health through innovative nutraceutical solutions.

2. What are the core values and mission that drive INNOBIO's operations and culture?

Dr. Wu: At INNOBIO, everything we do comes back to our core values and mission. Our value is “Hearts of Healers, Promises Kept.” To us, this means putting people first—whether it's our customers, partners, or end-users—and delivering on every promise we make with trust and reliability.  

Our mission, “Based in Nature, Full of Health,” is really about blending the best of nature with cutting-edge science. We're passionate about creating nutritional ingredients that not only improve health but also align with sustainable practices.

3. How would you describe your leadership philosophy, and how do you foster a culture of innovation and excellence at INNOBIO?

Dr. Wu: My leadership philosophy centers on empowering people, fostering collaboration, and embracing bold thinking. I believe that a leader's role is not just to guide but to create an environment where individuals feel like owners of the company, inspired to innovate and take initiative. At INNOBIO, I've always emphasized leading by example, particularly during pivotal moments such as tackling complex R&D challenges or exploring new markets.

Innovation at INNOBIO thrives because we dare to experiment and push boundaries. Even in challenging times, I've prioritized significant investments in R&D because I believe innovation starts with a willingness to take risks. We encourage employees to challenge conventions, propose fresh ideas, and collaborate across disciplines to create solutions that redefine industry standards.  

4. With operations in Asia, the Americas, and Europe, how does INNOBIO tailor its strategies to meet the diverse needs of these markets?

Dr. Wu: At INNOBIO, we recognize that each region has unique demands, regulatory requirements, and consumer preferences, and we've structured our operations to address these differences effectively. Our headquarters in China drives global innovation and strategy, while our regional offices and warehouses in the Netherlands and the United States enable us to maintain a strong local presence and ensure responsive service.  

For example, in the United States, where sports nutrition and plant-based products dominate, we emphasize innovative, functional ingredients for fitness and wellness. Meanwhile, in Europe, the growing emphasis on sustainability and organic certifications shapes our product development and marketing strategies.  

To make our work more focused, we continuously engage with customers at global trade shows and through targeted advertising campaigns, gathering valuable feedback on market trends and consumer needs. Internally, we conduct regular market research by region, analyzing emerging ingredients and finished product trends to stay ahead of industry shifts. By understanding the needs of end consumers, we ensure that our offerings not only meet but anticipate market demands.

We employ rigorous testing protocols at each stage, from raw material sourcing to final product delivery, ensuring consistency and reliability. Our global operations are unified by a centralized quality assurance team, which oversees compliance and provides training to ensure our standards are uniformly met. By integrating advanced technologies and maintaining a culture of accountability, we consistently deliver products that exceed industry benchmarks.

6. How does INNOBIO incorporate sustainability and environmental considerations into its production processes and product development?

Dr. Wu: Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. INNOBIO employs eco-friendly technologies, such as green chemistry and fermentation processes, to minimize our environmental footprint. We focus on sourcing renewable raw materials and optimizing resource utilization during production.

In product development, we prioritize creating solutions that align with global sustainability goals. For example, our Synnovo® Amino Acids are derived from fermentation processes, which optimize resource usage, and significantly lower carbon emissions. Additionally, our encapsulated products enhance efficiency and reduce waste in various applications.

Our dedication to sustainability has been recognized globally, including receiving the 2023 EcoVadis Silver Medal for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This achievement highlights our progress in areas like environmental management, labor and human rights, and sustainable procurement. Using patented biosynthesis and microencapsulation technologies, we significantly lower carbon emissions and energy consumption, contributing to a greener, low-carbon future.  

7. What are your thoughts on the role of liposomal delivery systems in improving nutrient bioavailability? 

Dr. Wu: At INNOBIO, we recognize the growing demand for advanced delivery systems in the nutraceutical industry, especially when it comes to enhancing the bioavailability of nutrients. Liposomal solutions have become a focal point of our R&D efforts due to their ability to protect sensitive ingredients and improve their absorption. We’ve made significant advancements in developing liposomal delivery systems that can encapsulate a wide range of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, plant extracts. These solutions not only enhance the stability of the active ingredients but also improve their bioavailability in the body.

Our expertise in technology plays a crucial role in ensuring the bioavailability and stability of our liposomal ingredients, which align with the global market's increasing demand for high-performance, bioavailable nutritional ingredients. 

8. What advancements or trends do you see emerging in the development and application of liposomal solutions for dietary supplements?  

Dr. Wu: Liposomal delivery systems significantly enhance the bioavailability of nutrients. This technology protects sensitive nutrients from degradation during digestion, ensuring better absorption in the body. It is especially beneficial for fat-soluble nutrients like Vitamin D and plant extracts, which often face absorption challenges without an effective delivery system.

Encapsulating nutrients in liposomes, which mimic the structure of cell membranes, improves cellular uptake and boosts nutrient delivery efficiency. This is becoming increasingly important as consumers demand supplements that offer higher efficacy and faster results. We expect liposomal solutions to play a growing role in the future of dietary supplements.

9. What advancements or trends do you see emerging in the development and application of liposomal solutions for dietary supplements?

Dr. Wu: In the development and application of liposomal ingredients for dietary supplements, liposomes are increasingly recognized for their ability to enhance the bioavailability and stability of active ingredients. At the same time, various innovative dosage forms, such as ready-to-drink (RTD) and gummies, are gaining popularity, reflecting consumer demand for convenience and diverse delivery options.

Gummies, in particular, stand out as a rapidly growing application. The integration of liposomal technology into gummy formats allows for improved nutrient stability and targeted delivery, catering to consumer preferences for both functionality and taste. This has enabled the incorporation of trending ingredients such as berberine for weight management and NMN for healthy aging, making liposomal gummies a significant trend in the nutritional supplement market.

10. What's a lesson or value you've learned through your work that you'd like to pass on to the next generation of industry leaders?  

Dr. Wu: One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is the importance of perseverance and adaptability when navigating challenges. The nutraceutical industry is constantly evolving, and successful leaders must anticipate trends while staying flexible to change. Equally critical is fostering collaboration—true innovation often stems from diverse perspectives and partnerships.

I also encourage future leaders to remain steadfastly customer-focused, ensuring that every product or service delivers genuine value and positively impacts lives. By embracing these principles, the next generation can not only drive meaningful progress but also uphold the integrity and purpose that define our industry.
